Yesterday (21st Feb, 2012), a student came to me hightlighting about my style of teaching. He/she said:
1. The display is not clear as the students could hardly see the writings. However, the figures and Tables are legible.
My response - please do come forward as I see tendency for students to sit at the back of the lecture hall. My intention is not for you to read the printable materials but to view the figures and the tables. The students have to actively summarize what I was trying to convey and jot down any notes that I write. To be better prepare in class, please review the materials before and after class and come and clarify to me after class if interjecting during class time are never your practice (it is perfectly fine with me).
2. He tried to compare me with other lecturers that he had experienced.
My response - Anything positive like writing the lectures as I speak are my preferences as the students are in synch with the lecture. I had done a mere power point show in the past but at the expense of students' understandings (definitely after teaching for 10 years I do not believe such way is effective). Most of the times, if it is a figure and too time-consuming to draw, I will display it. So does with the appendix, table etc. For formulas and derivations, I will go through in great details. For examples, it depends on my time management. The key is for the students to get the main theory. The tutorials/homework and exercises should help in solving numerical problems (of course it definitely relates to your TESTS/EXAM later on).

Spend 25-page a week (6-8 hours) in your reading, I am sure you will end up with an A in my class. Like I mention in class, talk to Mr Ong Chun Keat if you want to know how to study effectively.
